DSE PTA Weekly News
April 18, 2017
Dear Explorer Parents,
We hope everyone enjoyed a great Spring Break! It’s hard to believe that there are less than 8 weeks remaining in the school year, but there are still lots of fun PTA sponsored events coming your student’s way – including a very fun assembly for all students that meet their goal in the Principal’s Reading Challenge, which ends next Friday, 4/28. Please encourage your students to meet their reading challenge goal – they will not want to miss this awesome assembly!
We’ll be hosting Staff Appreciation Week May 1 – 5. A committee of volunteers have some special treats planned to thank and honor our fabulous teachers and staff. As part of this wonderful week, we’ll be catering breakfast and lunch for our staff each day. We’re asking for a small donation of $5 per student in order to make this possible. Envelopes will be sent home with students this week. Please return donations to your child’s classroom by Monday, 4/24. All donations are voluntary – we thank you for helping us celebrate our amazing staff!
The PTA will also be hosting a Math Festival on Tuesday, 5/9. The Math Festival is an exciting school-wide event to expose students to mathematics topics in a positive, self exploratory, festival-like atmosphere – it’s good mathematics, Common Core standards based and FUN! All Explorer students will have an opportunity to attend and participate in this great event.
Lastly, we invite you to attend the next General Association PTA & Foundation Meeting, which will take place on Thursday, 4/27 at 6:00pm in the MPR (prior to the TK and Kindergarten Information Meeting). Both the PTA and Foundation will be providing updates and the PTA will be holding its PTA Board Member Election for the 2017-2018 school year.

We are thrilled to present SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age, a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time.
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.
SCREENAGERS addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on—depicting teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it.
